La Jolla’s Dog-Friendly Spots: 10+ Places Your Dog Will Love

Chihuahua Dog

Dog-friendly establishments abound in La Jolla. Grab a bite, explore the shops, or take a seaside walk with your pup.

La Jolla in San Diego is in many ways the perfect neighborhood for everyone in the family—including our furry friends. From sandy shores to outdoor cafés, you’ll find many spots that make La Jolla a dog-friendly community.

Here are our recommendations on where to take your pets.

The beach

While La Jolla Shores Beach is dog-friendly, pets must be kept on a leash at all times. Dogs are allowed before 9AM and after 6PM (4PM in the winter), giving you quiet hours to stroll along the sand and enjoy the view.

For more space to run, head to Fiesta Island in Mission Bay (about a 15–20 minute drive from La Jolla). This large, off-leash area has sandy beaches and grassy fields, so your dog can splash in the water or chase a ball across open land.

Local parks

Kate Sessions Park, located in Mount Soledad, is a local favorite. You’ll have more than enough space to spread out for a picnic or toss a Frisbee, with panoramic views of downtown San Diego and the Pacific as your backdrop. Come by on a weekend, and your dog can mingle with other pets enjoying the park.

Closer to the beach, you’ll come across smaller neighborhood parks with shaded paths and quiet corners perfect for everyday walks. These hidden spots add to what makes La Jolla so welcoming for you and your pets.

Pet-friendly cafés

Treat yourself to a hot coffee or a refreshing drink while your dog rests nearby.

Parakeet Café is known for its fresh menu and dog-friendly outdoor seating. Water bowls are located outside for pets to drink.

Another option is Living Room Café, a longtime local favorite with plenty of patio seating. The relaxed vibe invites you to linger for a while, enjoy breakfast, or meet up with a friend—all while your dog stays by your side.

Local pet shops

When it’s time to spoil your pup, visit Decker’s Dog & Cat on Ivanhoe Avenue. This long-standing boutique is stocked with healthy treats, durable toys, stylish collars, and wellness products that your dog will more than appreciate.

For another option, check out Bella Woof, a charming pet boutique with a wide selection of products, from gourmet snacks to cozy beds and fashionable accessories.

Downtown La Jolla

End the day with a walk in the heart of La Jolla. At night, Prospect Street and the surrounding blocks are vibrant with outdoor dining and shopping. Most of these spaces are dog-friendly, and you’ll see many people with their pets out and about.

Sundays are especially a good day to check out the La Jolla Open Air Market. The market has fresh produce, baked goods, and artisan vendors, but it’s also a popular gathering spot for dog owners.
