The surfing scene in Pacific Beach gives off that distinctly SoCal energy. Crystal Pier and Tourmaline Surf Park are some of the popular spots to catch the waves.
There’s never really a dull moment in Pacific Beach. On any given day, you’ll find surfers checking the morning swell, cyclists cruising the boardwalk, and patio tables along Garnet filling up before noon. It’s the kind of San Diego neighborhood where there’s always something happening.
Here are the activities worth your time when you find yourself in PB.
1. Take a leisurely walk along Ocean Front Walk
Start with Ocean Front Walk, the paved path that threads Pacific Beach down toward Mission Beach. It’s made for bikes, skates, and long walks when you don’t feel like negotiating hills. If you’re the practical type, you’ll appreciate that it’s a multi-use path with an easy, open flow — watch your lane, enjoy the people-watching, and keep moving.
2. Do a pier lap at golden hour
A straight shot over the water with a front-row seat for sunrise or sunset, Crystal Pier is one of Pacific Beach’s popular haunts. Walk it, fish it, take five and watch surfers do what surfers do.
At the far end, a row of small cottages sits directly above the ocean — one of the few places in San Diego where you can actually stay over the water. Even if you’re just passing through, it adds a quiet sense of history and character to the walk.
3. Try a surf session that feels approachable
For a more relaxed surf vibe, aim north toward Tourmaline Surf Park. The waves here tend to roll in softer and more predictably, making it one of the more forgiving breaks along this stretch of coast.
Closer to the center of the neighborhood, near Crystal Pier, offers a livelier scene. The waves can be punchier, the lineup a bit more crowded, and the energy distinctly SoCal. It’s a good spot for confident beginners ready to level up — or intermediate surfers who don’t mind sharing the water with others.
4. Go for a bike ride in nearby Mission Bay
If you want a break from the waves, go for a bike ride around Mission Bay. The paved path that circles the bay is flat, wide, and easy to follow. Ride a short stretch or take on the full loop, which is about 12 miles, depending on your energy level.
You’ll pass small beaches, grassy parks, playgrounds, and marinas along the way, with plenty of spots to stop if you feel like it.
5. Stop by the Farmers’ Market on Tuesdays
Every Tuesday from 2–7 P.M., the Pacific Beach Farmers’ Market takes over Bayard Street between Garnet and Grand. Because it runs in the late afternoon and early evening, it fits easily into almost any weekday routine.
Vendors line the block with produce, prepared foods, baked goods, and pantry staples. Some people come to shop for the week; others pick up dinner from one of the food stands and eat at the nearby outdoor tables.
6. Take a view break at Kate Sessions Park
For one of the best views in Pacific Beach, go to Kate Sessions Park. The hilltop park overlooks Mission Bay, downtown San Diego, and the coastline.
The layout is simple: large open grass areas, a playground, picnic tables, and plenty of room for pickup games or birthday gatherings. Because of its elevation, it catches steady breezes and stays cooler than the beach on warmer days. Plus, it’s also a reliable sunset spot, with clear west-facing views.
