5 Best San Diego Attractions to Visit in Winter 2025-2026

San Diego's Attraction
Mild weather and holiday spirit make winter one of the best times to explore some of San Diego’s standout attractions.

Don’t write off San Diego just yet come winter season. You’ll find several sights and activities worth checking out during the colder months, from whale watching to museum hopping.

While much of the country bundles up, winter in the city rarely dips into freezing territory. So you can enjoy comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds — making it quite convenient for anyone to explore San Diego attractions that capture the best of the season.

The Gaslamp Quarter

San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter has a distinct charm  during winter. Holiday lights brighten its Victorian streets, and the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights brings decorated boats cruising along the waterfront.

The best part is that you don’t need a detailed plan or itinerary to check it out. Just show up,

grab a warm drink, wander through boutiques, and settle into a rooftop lounge for the evening. Cool nights pair well with a show, a casual stroll, or lingering over an outdoor dinner.

Balboa Park

Balboa Park is a standout in any season, but winter comes with its signature December Nights celebration. For two evenings, the entire park fills with music, lights, and community events. Some museums, like the San Diego Museum of Art, open their doors for free for a limited-time as well. Make sure to check their websites beforehand.

While you’re in the area, it’s also a good idea to schedule a visit to the nearby San Diego Zoo, whose Jungle Bells event showcases light displays and festive holiday performances.

USS Midway Museum

Winter’s clear skies and mild breezes make the USS Midway Museum a must-visit. The flight deck offers panoramic harbor views, while below-deck exhibits and restored aircraft give insight into naval aviation history. Because the museum is largely self-guided, you can move at your own pace, explore interactive activities, and linger longer in areas that interest you.

Maritime Museum of San Diego

Just up the waterfront, the Maritime Museum of San Diego offers a quieter but equally memorable way to spend a winter afternoon. With historic vessels like the Star of India and a collection of submarines and steam-powered ships, the museum brings maritime history to life.

The museum’s outdoor decks are also great spots to check out, whether you’re taking a self-guided tour, joining a sailing adventure, or hopping aboard a historic boat for a bay cruise.

La Jolla Cove

Winter at La Jolla Cove is a real treat for nature lovers. Scenic trails, tide pools, and sea lion sightings make the area perfect for coastal walks or short hikes. Winter time is also great for whale watching, as gray whales migrate along the coast. The best whale-watching vantage points are often from higher coastal bluffs or on tours.

Additionally, nearby Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve offers coastal trails with panoramic ocean views, and Mission Trails Regional Park provides inland options for hiking or evening strolls.
