Surf shops, small boutiques, coffee counters, convenience stops, and casual lunch spots line Garnet Avenue in tight succession, all within a few walkable blocks of the ocean.
If Pacific Beach had a spine, it would be Garnet Avenue.
It runs east to west, connecting Interstate 5 to the ocean, and in the process gathers most of the neighborhood’s daily life along a single stretch of pavement. Coffee shops open early. Retail rolls up its doors mid-morning. And by evening, restaurant patios and bars take over.
If you want to get to know PB better, Garnet Avenue is a good starting point.
It’s the main street
Garnet didn’t accidentally become the neighborhood’s hub. It began as College Avenue in 1887, part of an early plan to anchor Pacific Beach around a university campus. While the campus vision didn’t last, the street did — and over time, it became the commercial backbone of the neighborhood.
Today, it still functions as a true main street. Errands, coffee runs, retail stops, dinner plans, and late-night meetups all unfold along the same stretch of road.
Garnet by day: Shops, coffee, daily errands, and everything in between
During the day, Garnet Avenue functions as Pacific Beach’s primary retail corridor.
Surf shops, small boutiques, coffee counters, convenience stops, and casual lunch spots line the street in tight succession, all within a few walkable blocks of the ocean. You can run a quick errand, grab coffee, and browse a storefront without needing to move your car.
It isn’t a polished shopping district designed for a full-day outing. It’s practical and compact — the kind of place where you park once and take care of several things in under an hour.
A few daytime staples include:
- Better Buzz Coffee – A busy corner café known for strong coffee drinks and steady foot traffic from morning onward.
- Kono’s Cafe – A long-running breakfast spot near the beach, popular for straightforward plates and outdoor seating.
- The Baked Bear – Custom ice cream sandwiches that draw an afternoon crowd.
- Pacific Beach Fish Shop – Straightforward seafood (tacos, plates, sandwiches) that works for lunch or an easy early dinner.
- Taco Surf – Located just off Garnet, this place offers casual Mexican food that fits the beach setting and keeps things simple.
Garnet at nighttime is… a different personality
By evening, Garnet changes it up. Restaurants fill first — especially on weekends — and as the night progresses, the bars and clubs take over. The same blocks that handled coffee runs and retail during the day become noticeably louder and more crowded after dark.
That dual personality is part of the street’s identity. You can come for an early dinner and be home before it peaks, or stay later and step into the more active nightlife scene.
If you want to see that side of Garnet, a few well-known stops include:
- PB Shore Club – A long-standing ocean-adjacent sports bar known for big crowds and an active weekend scene.
- Mavericks Beach Club – A large indoor-outdoor venue with multiple bars and a high-energy atmosphere.
- The Local Pacific Beach – A more casual option with pub-style food and a steady neighborhood crowd.
- Moonshine Beach – A country-themed bar with live music and a dance floor.
How to explore Garnet Ave like a local
Go on foot or by bike if you can. Garnet is best at walking speed; you’ll miss the point if you’re hunting for the perfect parking spot every ten minutes.
Start inland, end at the water. Begin around the busier commercial stretch, then stroll west until the street basically hands you the beach.
Have a “one stop per block” rule. Garnet is easy to overdo. Keep it simple, keep it fun, and leave something for next time.
